We are currently casting for a second season of the highly rated MTV “Tiara Girls”, a documentary series that follows girls as they prepare for upcoming pageants. MTV “Tiara Girls” aims to show viewers all the hard work and determination that goes into preparing for pageants.
America is obsessed with pageants and the beautiful girls that enter them. So why do you compete? Do your peers give you a hard time? Do you ever have to deal with jealousy? Does your family support you? Have you ever competed in a pageant with an unusual twist; something off the beaten path?
If you are preparing for an upcoming pageant -- no matter how big or small – we’d like you to share your story and reveal to the world what really goes on in the life of a pageant girl. I am Filipino but I perfectly understood why Miss Philippines was not even an inch away from the Miss World crown.
I was so proud of Carlene Aguilar’s presence in Miss World pageant, checking on websites and discovering her impact to beauty pageant experts was a moment of pride and joy. And when she was chosen Miss Cyber Press World, I was really thinking and praying that she would become our country’s first Miss World. 5-5 is my lucky number and I wanted Carlene to have my luck and be crowned as the 55th Miss World.
But when I saw that there was no sense of balance in the list of judges, I somehow felt that it would be hard for her to make it. I was thinking that judges’ mindset and exposure would define their own concept of a beauty queen ( in a Euro or Latina stereotype), and even if there would be variations for they have different regional identities, but I knew that a Miss Philippines in Carlene would be lacking depth in all of them. I was really afraid they would see her as too manicured and they would not find the natural beauty of a Filipina in Carlene. I wished they have visited websites to see for themselves how people have adored Miss Philippines.
When Azra Akin (Miss World 2002, Turkey), was asked by the host on final night what was she looking for as judge, she pointed out that “first its beauty, then the personality that is seen through the eyes and the smile.” I was looking at Carlene’s impact on the TV screen, I found the smile so sweet but the eyes did not have the glow of confidence. Miss Philippines was definitely a better speaker than Miss Korea but Eun Young Oh was glowing and her video footage showed a pretty-and-happy persona. Carlene was somewhat tense, her sparkling elegant gown overshadowed her. And the hair did not have the freedom to be the crowning glory of a Filipina. While Miss Korea’s chima- inspired gown helped in making a difference on stage, it pays to project your own national identity, plus the fact that she already had an edge for her "Beauty with a Purpose Award" was presented as an important achievement.
Carlene did not have a chance to overpower her fellow Asians for the interview portion was too short and they had it only as part of the introduction, there was no opportunity for her to give us a moment of intellectual orgasm or impress the crowd with a longer line in Mandarin – I wanted the audience to know that she is good with the Chinese language.( Miss South Africa sounded smart but her beauty is not typically African so the slot went to an all-African Miss Tanzania but Carlene was truly an Asian beauty) I wanted Carlene to have the same impact created by Chelsi Smith when Miss Universe was held in Africa, the crowd loved Chelsi as their own. I wanted China to welcome the homecoming of the daughter but there was some kind of inferiority complex in Carlene – am not sure about this, this is just an impression.
I respected the judges’ choice of Miss Iceland Unnur Birna. I actually like her subtle and simple presence in all portions. She was not overpowering but she has this old-fashion glory. She is like the typical muse in a prom – in a good-girl mold. And she was visible – her subtle presence was strongly felt. The face of an angel was shining in Unnur, the 55th Miss World!

Denise Perrier Lanfranchi
Miss World 1953
Denise was the third woman to be crowned Miss World. She went on to enjoy global recognition as a model and international fund-raiser, before returning to catwalk and photographic modelling. She also worked in TV and cinema, before taking on numerous civil roles in local government and associations in her native France.
Ann Sidney
Miss World 1964
Ann Sidney is still an exemplary ambassador for Miss World and the good works it does. Ann’s reign took her around the World five times. She also joined Bob Hope on his USO tours of Asia. This led Ann into further work for good causes and enhanced her life awareness. Ann has revisited many countries in her work as a stage and TV actress and singer.
Lucia Petterle
Miss World 1971
Lucia was a student of medicine when she was crowned Miss World in 1971 and her work as a doctor has set high standards. In 1974 she completed her studies and became a trainee doctor. Her work took her to Paris for six years to specialise in child neurology and today we lives and works in Rio de Janeiro at the Brazilian Public Hospital caring for disadvantaged children. She also runs her own paediatric clinic. So far the only Brazilian to win the coveted title, Lucia became a TV regular in her home country and she continues to play an active role as a judge in the Miss Brazil pageant.
Wilnelia Merced
Miss World 1975
Wilnelia is the only Puerto Rican to be crowned Miss World. It was an event to change her life and open doors to numerous charitable projects. Married to the British TV entertainer Bruce Forsyth, Wilnelia concentrates much of her effort to charity. In 1994 she formed the Wilnelia Merced Foundation to help sick and underprivileged children in Puerto Rico. She is also patron of Every Child, which supports some of the World’s most vulnerable and marginalised children. Recently another dream came true when she was awarded Magna Cum Laude on gaining her batchelor’s degree in Humanities at the Universidad del Turabo in Caguas, Puerto Rico. For the past three years, Wilnelia has been the designer of the Miss World beachwear collection.
Mariasela Alvarez
Miss World 1982
Born into one of the Dominican Republic’s leading academic families, Mariasela was on course for a University career as an architect. As an architect she has designed many buildings in her home country, including one of Santo Domingo’s landmarks, Torre Cristal. Mother-of-four Mariasela, who is now living in Spain, is due to start filming her own TV show. She is one of the most recognised figures in latin Caribbean TV with a run of successful TV entertainment and chat shows– including a successful eight-year run with her award-winning show Esta Noche Mariasela.
Julia Kurochkina
Miss World 1992
Moscow-born Julia is an only child whose father worked in communication and whose mother was a housewife in Soviet Russia. At 18 she became Soviet Union’s first Miss World winner. After her crowning, she traveled the world as Miss World. These experiences helped form her positive outlook on life and led to a flourishing career in exhibitions and tourism. Julia lives in Moscow with her daughter. She still travels a lot and, of course, her title and enhanced worldview have helped her greatly.
Diana Hayden
Miss World 1997
Diana Hayden is an actress, international model and former face of l’Oreal from the Indian city of Hyderabad. Winning the Miss World title propelled her to global fame in November 1997. She went on to study acting at Britain’s Royal Academy, concentrating on the works of Shakespeare. Having debuted in a film version of Othello in South Africa, Diana is now a well known actress in Bollywood. Diana is active with charities worldwide, raising millions of dollars for women and children in developing countries. A familiar face at prestigious events, Diana was a guest at the White House State Dinner, the Cannes Film Festival, the London Film Festival, the historic gathering at the United Nations for Celebrity Goodwill Ambassadors, and dinners at Prince Charles’ Highgrove home.
Agbani Darego
Miss World 2001
Nigerian born Agbani made history as the first black African to win the prestigious Miss World crown. Since then she has grown into a versatile and incredibly expressive woman. In her home country she received an honorary chieftain title when she was only 18 years old, and at 19 she became one of the youngest women to receive the honour of Officer of the Niger award from her president. Her career has developed as a top model, appearing in many leading style bibles such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and Essence. Agbani currently lives and works in New York.
Azra Akin
Miss World 2002
Azra embodies the values and spirit of Miss World. She radiates warmth and compassion, which has seen her raise millions for charity at home and abroad. Azra is an genuine all-rounder. In 2003 she was joint winner of British TV sports challenge The Games. An international model and actress, Azra has developed a thriving career as an international film and TV actress and is currently staring in a major Turkish soap opera.

I have absolutely no idea why Trinidad and Tobago is getting so little press. She is a high fashion model. It is going to be extremely interesting to see who makes top 15. I would not be surprised if the most photographed delegates get in ahead of the young women in the region who really deserve a top 15 bert.
The Caribbean by far in my opinion is the most confusing region. Whereas at least 2 of the best competitors from the other 5 groups are getting press, in the Caribbean only Miss Puerto Rico is getting heavy press along with Jamaica and Martinique; the latter 2 (although beautiful) in my opinion could not make top 15 if the old system of selecting finalists were being used this year. Dominican Republic is also getting press but she is no way top 15 material. Martinique is better. Where is Trinidad and Tobago I wonder?
Well I will just have to wait and see what happens on Dec. 10.
From the Americas, I like Costa Rica and Venezuela. Canada could pull a surprise though. Too bad Ms. USA is not one of the favourites but she is beautiful regardless of what happens.

Miss World 2005 - News Room
MISS WORLD 2005 AND ITS PRE-PAGEANT FAVORITES
Miss World is about to get started, and the question that won’t shut for the next 35 days or so is: Who will succeed Maria Julia Mantilla?
We have invited some of the world’s greatest pageant experts and followers to give their opinion throughout the 4 weeks of competition, and they have already named a few contestants who are very promising, even before they land in Sanya. Who are the pre-pageant favorites? Find out now:
ASIA PACIFIC
The Favorites: Philippines and China.
Strong Alternates: India, Australia and Malaysia
Although officially speaking this region has 6 winners (5 from India and 1 from Guam, who took over after the original winner from Germany was dethroned), no beauty from the Far East has ever won the Miss World title. The pageant will be held in China for the third consecutive year, and many people believe this is the perfect time for it to happen.
Carlene Aguilar, Miss Philippines, is a pageant veteran whose beauty and massive fan support put her right on the top of the Asian Pacific list, being a #1 favorite for one of two spots reserved for this region.
Miss China, Ting Ting Zhao is also strong, and could easily pull the 2nd slot.
Trying to ruin the two Asian favorites’ plans are Miss India, a model from Vijaywada; Miss Australia, a true beauty from Down Under, and statuesque Miss Malaysia, whose experience as a model and confidence are assets not to be dismissed.
Also keep an eye on Miss Japan, discovered and coached by the great Ines Ligron, Japan’s new Miss World licensee.
NORTHERN EUROPE
The Favorites: Iceland and Switzerland.
Strong Alternates: Norway, Ireland, England and Russia.
With so many competitors from the old continent, Miss World decided to create two new geographic regions: Northern and Southern Europe. Although the criteria they used is arguable, the beauty of European delegates (northern or southern) is not.
Miss Iceland (photo), the daughter of a former Icelandic beauty queen, is our experts’ strongest bet in Northern Europe, with her classical looks and witty. She is closely followed by stunning Miss Switzerland, who some dare to say will be either the next Miss World, or the next Miss Universe.
Miss Norway, a Miss Universe 2005 semi-finalist, will certainly fight for one of the two positions in this group, and so will Miss Ireland, a candidate from a country that won the Miss World title just 2 years ago and once again will be competing strongly.
Miss England, Hamassa Kohistani of Afghan descent, made headlines worldwide by being the first muslim to win the beauty title. Miss Russia, Yulia Ivanova, is being compared to former Miss Universe Oxana Fedorova, which means: eye on her!
SOUTHERN EUROPE
The Favorites: Italy, Turkey and Spain.
Strong Alternates: Albania, Slovakia and Lebanon.
The Mediterranean, land and sea of so much history and beauty! How unfair it is to choose only two beauties from a region packed with favorites…
Sofia Bruscoli of Italy (photo), right now has our experts’ preference in the region. If she wins, Sofia will become Italy’s first winner ever of any grand slam title. Isn’t it weird?
Hande Subasi of Turkey has a lot of things going for her: Not only she has an impressive modeling portfolio, her unique beauty and height will definitely make her stand out. What could work against her is the fact that Turkey won the title a mere 3 years ago, with Azra Akin.
Spain, Mireia Verdu, could be the other “Southern European” to reach Miss World’s semi-finals if they were to choose them today.
Since it was probably the most difficult region to decide, Albania, Slovakia and Lebanon, all models, and all gorgeous, are equally strong and have a strong chance to ‘make the cut’. But wait a minute! Is Lebanon located in Europe??
Back to the girls, who else should not be taken for granted? The rest of the girls in this region are some of the most charming “dark horses” you will ever find!
AFRICA
The Favorites: Namibia and Ethiopia.
Strong Alternates: Nigeria, South Africa and Botswana.
Two things are certain in the African continent: One is uncertainty; the other is Namibia. Placed right on the top of 9 out of 10 experts, Miss Namibia is not only the #1 African front-runner, but also one of the favorites for the crown.
As for the others, scarcity of photos and info available in the net prevented them to make and assertive prediction, although we can expect Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa to compete strongly.
But one of Miss World's characteristics is the unpredictability of its results; last year, when most people thought Angola or Kenya would take honors as Queen of Africa, Nigeria pulled a last-minute surprise.
CARIBBEAN
The Favorites: Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
Strong Alternates: Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica.
Two Latinas from two countries which have been doing well in pageants lately are the dominant powers in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic is ‘the country of the moment’, having placed in the last editions of all 4 main beauty pageants in the world. Beautiful Elisa Abreu de los Santos is expected to keep the streak going.
Miss Puerto Rico, Ingrid Rivera, is a model who knows how to handle pressure, and she will go to China with one goal in mind: to win the Miss World crown.
Now, if they think it will be easy, it won't be: Miss Martinique, Moana-Sarann, is beautiful and well-accomplished enough to go far in the competition. Miss Trinidad & Tobago is trendy, sexy, and perfectly well-prepared. Miss Jamaica has tradition on her side, and other islands are ready to pull a surprise. Let’s wait and see what secrets the Caribbean hold for us.
THE AMERICAS
The Favorites: Canada and Mexico.
Strong Alternates: Costa Rica, Brazil and Venezuela.
No other region has so many titles, so much interest in pageants, or so much contestants’ preparation. Beauty pageants are a strong industry in most American nations, and the battle here shall be fierce.
Canada’s Ramona Rina Amiri is the #1 favorite in the region. Let’s not forget that the current Miss Universe is from Canada, and the last time the same country won the two main beauty titles in the world was in 2000, when India bagged both the Miss World and Miss Universe crowns. It could happen again this year.
Mexico is hungry for its first Miss World title, and if not, at least to be named best in the Americas. Dafne Molina has what it takes to get that far. Preparation, charisma, beauty, height, determination... She will go far.
Brazil’s Patricia Reginato has lived in Asia, where she worked as a model. She knows the drill and is beautiful enough to pull a back-to-back victory for South America. Exotic Miss Venezuela also comes with full power, while Miss Costa Rica, the current Miss Asia Pacific, is one of the hottest bets for the crown among internet fans.
THE NEXT MISS WORLD?
It’s early to say, but right now the pressure is on Miss Philippines’ shoulders. This stunner will arrive in China as ‘the one to beat’. Her challenge will be to live up to the expectations fans all over the world are putting on her.
The Philippines has won several international titles this year, including Miss International and Miss Italia nel Mondo. Carlene wants to make sure she is no exception.
Second in the list would be Miss Italy, followed by Namibia, Canada and Spain.
Although it is early and so much is still ahead, it’s good to remind you that in the last couple of years
our experts’ picks actually won the title: Ireland in 2003 and Peru in 2004.
But the pageant has not started, and we are sure that the rest of the girls, all beautiful, charming and intelligent, have their own surprises to pull and one of them might be crowned the new Miss World. We shall see.

Why do we have to send a non-semi finalist material to Miss Universe? Let be honest here: Miss Philippines nose, walk, figure, and communication skills was the factor..why she went home empty handed. She did won the Miss Photogenic Award but it was a laugh at loud...They really dissed her..Billy and Nancy should be fired and shot!!! Even Gionna Cabrera Miss Philippines don't want to receive it.Everybody saw the reaction of Billy Bush and Nancy...Of course, they would react because it wasn't deserving and not even close as photogenic. Thanks to all filipinos for voting. I give you guys two thumbs up for your supprot. It pretty clear that they tossed out right the awarding because of unsatisfied results.
Philippines please lets open our eyes...We think our candidate is pretty, etc etc etc. but she's not. Most countries send their most beautiful gal and we we sent...I can't say it. The bar has been raised...even the seminalist is no longer 10 but 15 and still we can't come up at the finals.

Miss Thailand Chanaporn Rosjan has won the best costume award in the first round of Miss Universe 2005 competition, the third Thai lady to snare the award in the Miss Universe pageant.
The traditional Thai costume, glittered on Rosjan, stood out on the stage and received enthusiastic applause from the audience in the first round of competition Wednesday night. Miss Mexico Laura Elizondo was second runner-up, seizing the best fancy costume category, reported The Nation newspaper on Thursday.
In the 1969 and 1988 Miss Universe competition, beauty queen Saengduan Manwong and Pornthip Nakhirankanok were also rewarded with the best costume prizes.
Designed by fabric expert Theerapan Chanchareon, the costume was inspired from the apparel of court ladies during the Ayutthaya period. The tiara is imitated to a period piece on display in a museum in Philadelphia in the United States.
The accessories, including a bracelet and belt, are made of real gold. The textiles were weaved from golden silk and was time- consuming. The outfit costs some 1 million baht (23,800 US dollars) .
This year's Miss Universe Pageant brought together 82 beauties from 82 countries to compete for the most coveted beauty title of the world. The final will take place on May 31.

THE Champion League of Five, the "Search for the Star in Million" grand contenders, outperformed each other at Aliw Theater Sunday night for the Main Event, the search's grand finals, which was aired live over ABS-CBN.
It was the last time, 18-year-old Jerome Sala, the "Balladeer Extraordinaire" from Bohol; 19-year-old Ryan Racal, the "Star on the Rise" from Cebu City; 15-year-old "Pop Honey" Nikki Bacolod from Iligan City; 15-year-old "Fab & Funky" Mabel Bacusmo from Baybay, Leyte; and 16-year-old Tondo girl and so-called "The Glam Rocker" Jona Lumbera to face each other to see who will become the Star in a Million!
And Jerome Sala bested them all with his version of "Kung Ako'y Iiwan Mo," popularized by Basil Valdez.
He faced Nikki Bacolod, who performed a quite difficult, but inspirational piece "Light in the Million Mornings," in the final showdown.
For all the hard work and sacrifice, Sala won P5-million worth of prizes, including a house and lot, a recording contract with Star Records, a regular job with "ASAP," and P1 million in cash.
Jerome's strengths are his deep and moving baritone voice and his glaring sex appeal. He sings like a modern day Nonoy Zuniga and has the same audience appeal as a new generation Rico J. Puno.
From wildcard to grand champion, this native Boholano's wild ride started at the tender age of five, when his father insisted that he sings to prove he got the musical genes passed on from his grandfather.
One of the judges, Wyngard Tracy was so impressed with Jerome, telling him after the final showdown: "Ang galing mo. Kaya magpapaprint ka na ng posters mo dahil siguradong pipila sila sa unang concert mo."
Jerome won his first singing contest at age five. Since then, he joined and won barangay, fiesta and municipal singing contests, even traveling in small boats to join competitions in neighboring islands.
First to be eliminated in the grand finals was Ryan Racal, followed by Jona Lumbera. Tension filled the jampacked Aliw Theater after the third showdown that showcased vocal talents of Jerome, Nikki and Mabel Bacusmo. And the judges picked Jerome and Nikki.
"The Search for the Star in a Million" was developed with the intent of producing well-rounded singing superstars.
Like the rest of the star search contenders who were earlier eliminated (Jorell Canuel, Billy Joel Bartolome, Myke Caluma, Veejay Aragon, Diana Fe Castillo, and Christine Fernandez), the members of the Champion League of 5 all went through top-of-the-line singing workshops as well as courses on fashion, personality development, hosting, dancing and even acting.
The grand contenders were judged based on their scores from their respective performances on the last two episodes, which were totaled to complete their final score.
Aside from the judges' scores, the audience also rooted for their choices through their text votes.
Joining the regular judges of the search, Agot Isidro, Rowell Santiago and Wyngard Tracy, were Star Records managing director Annabelle Regalado, Viva Entertainment Artist & Repertoire director Eugene Villaluz and ABS-CBN bigwig Enrico Santos.

Photos of bikini-clad Miss Universe contestants posing in front of a revered Buddhist temple have been removed from the pagaent's website after the Thai government complained that the pictures were offensive.
The controversial images will also be edited out of a film to be shown during the globally televised final of the competition on May 31 in Bangkok, one of the pagaent organizers said on condition of anonymity.
Women from 81 countries are vying for the Miss Universe title. Canada is being represented by Miss Universe Canada Natalie Glebova. The Torontonian won the Miss Universe Canada 2005 title at the final event held at Casino de Montreal on Jan. 25.
The photos that caused offence featured some of the pagaent hopefuls wearing swimsuits on a boat in Bangkok's Chao Phraya river with Wat Arun - the famous Temple of the Dawn - in the background.
"This is against the way of life and beliefs of Buddhists and we strongly disagree with it," said Preecha Gunteeya, secretary general of the Culture Ministry's religious affairs department.
Preecha said that if the pageant organizers wanted to promote Thailand, "they should ask the contestants to wear Thai traditional costumes" when posing by the temple.
Thailand hopes that hosting the pageant will boost the country's tourism sector, which was badly hurt by last December's tsunami. It estimates that the event and related activities will generate more than 2.1 billion baht (US$54.6 million) of revenue.

We were able to witness the arrival of candidates a day ago. The first contestant that gave my attention right away was Miss Venezuela. She was very friendly and very fresh, vibrant and full of charisma. Another contestant that gave first impression was Miss Puerto Rico. I was surprised when I saw her in person everything changed. As of 2004, India, Thailand and the Philippines had produced two MISS UNIVERSE women each. The first Asian to win the title was Japan's Akiko Kojima in 1959.
In a major racial breakthrough in 1977, Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad-Tobago became the first black woman to win the coveted Miss Universe crown. From 1951 to 2004, no Asian had ever won the MISS WORLD title except 4 women from India. Similarly, from 1960 to 2004, no Asian had ever captured the MISS INTERNATIONAL crown except 3 women from the Philippines and a Lebanese in 2002.
Kerstin Haakonson, the first MISS WORLD from Sweden (1951), did not marry a Filipino but the first MISS UNIVERSE Armi Kuusela from Finland, did. She tied the knot with Virgilio Hilario. Interestingly, Jorge Araneta, another Filipino, married the first MISS INTERNATIONAL who won in 1960 - Maria Stella Marquez Zawadzky of Colombia. Jose Faustino of the Philippines did the same to the first MISS ASIA (now MISS ASIA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL) - Angela Filmer of Malaysia. No Filipino has courted (YET) the first MISS EARTH Catherine Svensson from Denmark who won in 2001.
Miss Philippines Evangeline Pascual was first runner-up to Marjorie Wallace from USA in the MISS WORLD 1973. Wallace was dethroned yet the humble Filipina refused to accept the vacant title.
Miriam Quiambao, a Filipina, was first runner-up to Mpule Kwelagobe from Botswana in the MISS UNIVERSE 1999, the first black African to win the title. Local media asked Quiambao if she would accept the crown had MISS UNIVERSE 1999 get impregnanted (referring to the final question during MISS UNIVERSE 1999 that if a Miss Universe get impregnated she should be dethroned), the humble Filipina's reply was she would never think it happens to Keneilwe during her reign.
MISS UNIVERSE 1993 Dayanara Torres from Puerto Rico left a Filipino boyfriend for a singer-composer Marc Anthony. Ironically, Miss Autralia 1994 Michelle Van Eimeren get married to a Filipino siger-composer Ogie Alcasid. They now have two children. Recently, Dayanara Torres and her husband get separated. Torres's ex-boyfriend get married to Miss Philippines 1994 Charlene Gonzales. They now have two (twins- a boy and a girl) children!
The first Asian woman to win as Miss Canada in 1996 was Renette Cruz, a native of Zamboanga City, Philippines. Miss Great Britain 1998 Leilani Dowding is half-Filipina, half-English. Angela Baraquio, a brainy woman of Asian descent (Filipina), nabbed the MISS AMERICA rhinestones in October 2000.
A decade has passed since MISS UNIVERSE took place on Asian soil. And almost a half decade has passed since an Asian won the title.

Think Pinoy fashion and probably the first name that comes to mind is Pitoy Moreno. Who doesn’t know this man once hailed as Asia’s fashion czar? His collections have girdled the globe since the 1960s: Paris, Rome, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Sweden, Vienna, Moscow, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Honolulu, Teheran, Morocco, Tokyo, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, China, among other cities. He’s dressed up royalty, First Ladies, heads of state and assorted VIPs. The barely five-foot-tall Pitoy may as well have stood 10 feet tall as he wowed ’em all in shows here and abroad.
To salute the man who put the Philippines on the fashion map of the world, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Gawad Kalinga are staging "Ginintuang Moreno: A Tribute to J. Moreno" on Oct. 26 and 27 at the CCP. Imelda Cojuangco, one of Pitoy’s muses, is chairperson for the gala night on Oct. 26 while Tingting Cojuangco takes over on the second night, Oct. 27. And yes, there’s going to be a third night, with co-chairpersons Marissa Concepcion and Vicky Cuisia, though no date has yet been set. The show, directed by Floy Quintos, features JMoreno’s timeless couture for the benefit of the CCP’s Arts for the People Program and Gawad Kalinga. To keep things humming are featured guests Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theater and Philippine Madrigal Singers.
Truly, Pitoy has reaped what he sewed. "All these 40 years, I’ve been putting up shows all over the world," says a truly proud Pitoy. "It’s not about me – it’s about the best of Philippine fashion, the best Filipino models, the best Philippine material. Everywhere I go, I try to promote our culture. I’ve exposed our piña, hablon, and accessories like tambourine. That’s why they called me the fashion czar of Asia. The tag came from a review that appeared in Honolulu Standard. A kababayan went up to them and said that if Jackie Kennedy had Oleg Cassini, we have Pitoy Moreno, the best in Asia. That’s how it all started – it was picked up in Manila and then spread all over Asia."
It was former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, a veritable walking advertisement for the terno, who asked Pitoy to do a lot of shows to promote Philippine fashion via Bagong Anyo.
And so came one show after another, one client after another, and sew forth and sew on. Nancy Reagan looked really regal in her Pitoy Moreno gowns as she graced the pages of a magazine in New York. Of the 13 clothes featured, seven were by Pitoy. President Lyndon B. Johnson had him called to do the gowns of his daughters. Pitoy has also made clothes for the Einsenhowers, the Carters and the Bushes. He once made a truly lovely kimona in piña for Queen Sirikit. His creations have also gotten Queen Sofia’s regal nod.
"Pitoy is really so good at what he does," says awardwinning actress and former Pitoy Moreno model Gloria Romero, almost in excelsis. "I really learned a lot from him, he’s a real pro."
Of course, it wasn’t all bliss. Gloria remembers all too well the blisters, too. "I had so much fun joining the Karilagan shows with the late Chona Kasten, Joji Felix Velarde, Conchitina Bernardo and Mary Prieto," Gloria begins to relate. "We brought our show from San Francisco to Los Angeles to New York to Honolulu. But then, I wasn’t able to join them in New York anymore because my ingrown nail was really bothering me and I was already limping from the pain. In fact, I modeled with my big toe all bandaged up."
That wasn’t the only tight spot Gloria got into. "I was already skinny at 97 lbs., but to get into those fully-beaded, slim-waisted Pitoy creations, you had to be skinnier," Gloria stoutly asserts. "I would sneak out to eat my favorite pancakes at Dollar Pancakes. Eventually, I put on some weight so come showtime, they would have a hard time zipping me up. In desperation, I had to wear a girdle."
It was one painful lesson learned. But Gloria, already then a mother of a toddler, did it all for love. "We didn’t do it for the money, it was more of charity work," she says. "But the friends we made and the experience we gained were something that money can’t buy."
"Yes, we did it mostly for charity," says Cherry Pie Villonco-Lazatin. "At that time, there was no professional association of models. We did not get paid for modeling. It was really just among friends, a barkadahan sort of thing."
Yes, they were all friends and this friendship has endured to this day. "Once somebody asked us, ‘What about intrigues? It’s like you’re in a convent school.’ Even our antics were very wholesome. Probably the most daring thing we had ever done was to watch the really risque movie Curious Yellow."
Cherry Pie was only 18 and fresh out of Marymount when she got her teeth into the fashion pie, modeling for Pitoy, Ben Farrales and Aureo Alonzo, among other designers. She relates, "At that time, Tita Conching Sunico would work it out so there were times when we would go abroad. And that was the time I looked forward to because it gave me a chance to see the world."
But as much as the glory, Cherry Pie remembers the gore. "I remember in Rome, we were asked to model shoes by an Italian designer that had a lot of beads," she recalls not-too-fondly. "Our feet became sore from the heavy beads and soon, they were bleeding as we were walking down the ramp."
If only Pitoy could sue the shoe designer for what he did to his models’ pretty feet!
If pain was something not-too-Greek to Pitoy’s models, Greece was something else. "Touring Greece before our scheduled show, we visited a museum atop a hill," Cherry Pie relates. "While we were in the museum, Joji Felix Velarde felt dizzy and sleepy and asked me to accompany her back to the bus. While we were resting in the bus, Joji said to me, ‘You know, I feel so dizzy, the bus is moving.’ From atop a hill, our bus just went rolling down. We were going forward and backward and when the bus landed, we jumped out of it. We were both bloodied. The vendors selling Turkish coffee and oranges saw us and took pity on us. One vendor peeled an orange with his dirty hands and handed it to us while another gave us Turkish coffee that tasted like mud. Then Pitoy and Tita Lina came out of the museum and saw us. Pitoy said, ‘You’re having merienda?’ Joji told him, ‘Pitoy, look at us!’ ‘What happened?’ Tita Lina asked. So the next day, we modeled with matching bruises on our knees and legs. They were so visible when we wore those miniskirts."
But certainly, there were no bruised egos here.
Bruised or not, Pitoy’s lovely models were sought after by some of the most eligible bachelors in town. For one, the statuesque Assumptionista Maita Gomez caught the eye of the son of the King of Saudi Arabia, Prince Majid. He would invite her to dinner. "But Pitoy is a strict disciplinarian, we always went in a group," says Cherry Pie.
Of course, after a brief modeling stint and a failed marriage, Maita made a quarter turn to the Left and fled to the mountains.
What about the time when Cherry Pie found herself with nothing to wear?
"Oh, yes, at the beginning of every trip, each one of us would have X number of clothes to model, which were tailor-made for us," says Cherry Pie. "We were modeling 15 to 20 clothes each, with Toti Evangelista doing our hair and makeup with Ernie Balgos. When we went to South America, the First Lady of Colombia bought all of Pitoy’s clothes which were my size. So by the time we got to our next stop, I had nothing to wear anymore!"
"Every single day was memorable," says a still stunning Toni Serrano-Parsons who now lends her beauty through those lovely floral arrangements she does. "The guests were always different. The location was always different. It was so much fun! Pitoy has remained a dear, wonderful friend."
Cherry Pie has her share of celebrity guests to remember. "We were in Rome then when I saw Chona Kasten at the lobby of our hotel with actor Gilbert Roland. Chona called us, ‘Ven aqui, ven aqui.’ So we joined them. Gilbert Roland taught us how to drink tequila with lemon. Those were our cheap thrills!"
Modeling for Pitoy was a eye-opener of sorts for the young Oriental beauty Jeannie Lim Goulbourn. "Pitoy told me not to put on eye shadow because he wanted my eyes to be as Chinese-looking as possible," says Jeannie. "This was really hard for me because one of my hang-ups as a child was the fact that I did not have big eyes."
Of course, when Pitoy wasn’t looking, Jeannie would cheat. "I’d put blush on my eyes to open them up. Pitoy wanted me to simply put on eyelashes and just an eyeliner to look as natural as possible."
Named one of the Philippines’ top models (with Chona Kasten, Toni Parsons, Pearlie Arcache, Maita Gomez, Tina Santos, Joji Felix Velarde, Baby Santiago and Cherrie Pie Villonco), Jeannie went around with her hair in a ponytail – yes, like that of Nancy Kwan. "I used to wear a fake ponytail that reached down to my waist," Jeannie recalls.
Truly, Pitoy banked on Jeannie’s Oriental looks at a time when the catwalk was dominated by mestiza-looking models. "In Rome, I thought the press photographers would go after the mestiza models," says Jeannie, "but they kept taking my pictures. I told Pitoy, ‘You were right. It pays to look Asian.’ Pitoy certainly knew what Europeans wanted. He knew the right approach. He wanted each of his models to have his/her own individual look."
Jeannie started modeling for Pitoy at 16, "as soon as my braces came off."
"Pitoy kept telling me to go out with nice, handsome men, but I was very much involved with my journal, where I would write all the places I went to, etc.," says Jeannie. "I could only take so much disco partying. So they were teasing me, ‘Jean Margaret, you’re wasting your time. You have to know how to french kiss.’"
The best thing about modeling for Pitoy?
"Pitoy is a great showman," says Jeannie. "He’s such a charming man a lot of people really enjoy meeting him. He’s not so tall so they really find him so cute, especially because he wears such attractive clothes. He has a certain trademark, a certain style that even through the years you can recognize as unmistakably his."
Beauty queen Carol Masibay knew she didn’t make a mistake when she hopped on a train to join Pitoy and a group of models to France and Monaco. "From Paris, we took a train to Monaco," Carol relates. "We were all so tired and sleepy from partying the night before so we almost missed our stop. Sleepy-eyed and in rollers and all, we had to get out of the train, lugging 30 suitcases in 10 minutes. Good thing we had our male models to do that."
Carol especially remembers how cool Pitoy was even under extreme pressure. Few were the times when Pitoy would lose his cool. Carol relates one such instance, "We went to an ice cream place in Honolulu and Pitoy ordered a small scoop of ice cream. A lady came and gave him a really small scoop. Pitoy told her if she could make his scoop a bit bigger. The lady told him it was the only scoop he was gonna have for that day. An angry Pitoy told the lady that she shouldn’t be in an ice cream parlor as she belonged in a funeral parlor!"
No more small scoops of ice cream for Pitoy today – only fresh scoops about this workaholic man who continues to make headlines. To this day, Pitoy works eight days a week, attending to his clients with untiring dedication. He makes it a point to be there for his brides at their weddings so he could supervise every little detail, from putting on the gown and shoes to the cutting of the cake.
"I like doing it, I like to coordinate from day one," says Pitoy. "Sometimes, I have two weddings in a day so I hop from one place to another."
He continues to dress up some of the country’s best-dressed women. On top of Pitoy’s list are Imelda Cojuangco, Nene Quimson, Nelly Gonzalez, Vicky Quirino, Mercy Tuason, Chito Madrigal, Conchitina Bernardo, Celine Heras, Mila Drilon and Gretchen del Rosario.
Pitoy is up by 7 a.m. and starts his day with a light breakfast (hot tea, oatmeal, fresh orange juice or bread and white cheese or soft-boiled egg). But before that, he nourishes himself with food for the soul. "I pray," he says. "Then I read the newspaper, go to the working area, have lunch, go to the workshop-office-shop, have dinner, pray and then sleep."
Pitoy goes to the gym to keep fit. He stays away from meat. And he stays away from worries. "I try not to have tensions or enemies, but Manila is such an exciting place," says Pitoy.
The man, who dreamt of being a lawyer – or a politician or a social worker – certainly wears his heart on his sleeve.
"I wish that the economy would improve so that the local fashion industry would flourish," Pitoy muses.
Long live the fashion czar!

World Figure Skating Championships 2005
Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland tops World Championhips Figure Skating Short Program. Defending champion Evgeny Plushenko, often seemingly invincible, was anything but that during the short program. Suffering from numerous aches and pains, Plushenko finished fifth in the short program and is third overall headed into the free skate — seven points behind Lambiel.
After taking an injection for his pain, it wasn't a surprise when he went sprawling on his opening quad and struggled to stay on one foot on the triple Axel.
“I have a very bad situation right now because I've been skating only for two weeks,” Plushenko said. “For two weeks I was not practicing and gained four to five kilos (9 to 11 pounds). And when I started to practice again, some old injuries emerged again.”

I am getting frustrated with this American Idol Semi-Final round. America doesn't know the difference between a great singer and a bad singer. Shame on America! Last week, Jared Yates and Judd Harris were voted out not because they were bad singers but because they luck exposure. I hope this week, America opened their eyes and ears before they voted.
America wants Anthony Federov, Mario Vasquez, Mikalah Gordon, and Joe Murena to win.

My bestfriend and I met way back in high school. He is a basketball player and I am just an ordinary student. We've been bestfriend for 4 years now. We are always together...kind of attached to the hip..I don't want to tell him that I am in love with him coz he might punch me in the face. Everytime he got basketball practice he stayed in my place and often asked me to give him a full body massage. I can't take it anymore. I feel like my whole body will explode if I won't tell him the truth. I am having second thoughts because he is 6' 3" tall and I am only 5'8". He might smash me in the head.
Should I tell him that I am gay or not? Please give me advise.

Today they are fledgling designers. By next season, you will be reading about one of them in Elle and, possibly, sporting his or her threads.
At the very least, one will be the hot newcomer in the fashion industry.
All thanks to "Project Runway," one of the most-talked-about – and most-watched – reality TV shows. Bravo's baby is so hot, it even has beat out the channel's fab "Queer Eye."
Here's the gist: Basically, it's "Survivor" but the island is Manhattan and the 12 amateur designers must "outsew, outfit and outclass" their competition.
Each week, another heartbroken Hilfiger wannabe gets the Blahnik boot. And to ramp up the cattiness, the producers cram them all into a tiny apartment and keep the cameras rolling until each rejected hopeful is sent packing.
When 12 were cut to 3, those stressed-out artists had to compete in their final project: Create and show a collection at Olympus Fashion Week. After this last competition, the winner of "Project Runway" will be crowned "Queen (or King) of Couture."
And we were there!
WE SCORED ONE OF THE FEW INVITES to Friday's Project Runway Finalist Fashion Show.
In order not to reveal the ending of the show (which will be televised Feb. 23), Bravo producers presented four collections – including one from the designer who gets kicked off Wednesday night. The contestants who got to strut their hand-sewn styles were Austin Scarlett, Kara Saun, Jay McCarroll and Wendy Pepper.
If message boards are any indication, fans believe Wendy Pepper is the lame duck. Of course, fans and "Runway" contestants have both been wrong before.
"I think every designer who was left with Wendy up there on the runway thought they were in the safe zone," says Robert Plotkin, who got the heave-ho last week instead of Pepper. "I noticed whenever there was a designer up there next to her, the other designer went. Last week was my time to pack my garment bags, so to speak."
But before the show, it was Austin who looked sad and exhausted. After blaming his haggard appearance on "pulling an all-nighter to finish," he quickly retreated backstage.
In the front row were all of Bravo's stars, including the "Queer Eye" guys and James Lipton from "Inside the Actor's Studio," Miramax's Harvey Weinstein, and the judges of the final episode: model/host Heidi Klum, designer Michael Kors, Elle magazine's Nina Garcia and actress Parker Posey.
THE SHOW HELD MANY SURPRISES, the first being that Austin's collection was – at best – baaaddd. His "staple" pieces included spats (like jodhpurs but uglier), velveteen jackets and Marie Antoinette hair. The clothes looked like something from "Colonial House" meets "Amadeus." And if that wasn't bad enough, their construction looked haphazard and not one piece fit the models properly. (If he hadn't said so, I would have assumed Austin pulled an all-nighter.)
Kara's "Fantasy Fly-Girl" collection was created for women who are so sexy "they suck the air out of a room." With Kara's clothes, even the homeliest girl could pull that off. From blood-red fox fur shrugs to leather that molded to the skin like silk, her designs were impeccably executed and breath-taking. If I was a betting woman, I'd say Kara's got this competition wrapped up.
Next up was the infamous "cockroach" Wendy. She named her collection "The Thrill of the Hunt." It was far from thrilling, though, soliciting only a golf clap from the hostage audience. The best of her bunch was an orange quilted suit tailored in an updated equestrian style. The rest of her looong collection looked cheesy and cheap.
If Kara has any competition, it comes from Jay. "Stereotype" featured street-smart styles paraded in monochromatic presentations. From "Gold" (a quilted wrap with turtleneck and sequined skirt) to "Pink" (a shell necklace with stitched V-neck top and shredded skirt), each outfit represented a style of music from electronica and rap to rock 'n' roll. Each outfit was accessorized with a futuristic matching headset.
"Stereotype" was anything but – it showed Jay's rainbow of talent and vision.
Two of the four definitely showed they have what it takes.
My money's on Kara but we'll have to stay tuned.
The 'Project' premise
If you've missed any or all episodes, here is a quick synopsis of what the show is about:
"Project Runway" gives 12 aspiring designers a chance to break into the notoriously difficult-to-crack fashion world.
Supermodel Heidi Klum heads a panel of industry luminaries, including designer Michael Kors, Elle magazine fashion director Nina Garcia and "Sex and the City" stylist Patricia Field, who serve as judges and mentors.
Contestants are eliminated on a weekly basis, based on their execution of design challenges, until only three remained to face off with full lines on the catwalk Friday at New York's Fall Fashion Week. The winner's designs will be photographed for Elle by the magazine's world-renowned publication director, Gilles Bensimon. The winning designer will also receive a mentorship from the Banana Republic design team and $100,000 in seed money to help launch his or her own line.

Why he'll win: Much like Heatherette, Betsey Johnson or Galliano, there is always a market for the edgy, rock star dresser.
Why he won't: Jay takes risks with his designs. Because of that, his clothes invoke either a Love It or Hate It response. He'll be at the mercy of the judges' whim.
Kara Saun
AKA: "The Professional"
Age: 37
Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.
Why she'll win: Whether she is incorporating leather or Lycra, her work always reflects a modern sensibility with classic undertones. That's why Queen Latifah wore her dress to the 2000 Oscars.
Why she won't: Understated can often be interpreted as boring or unimaginative.
Wendy Pepper
AKA: "The Longshot"
Age: 39
Hometown: Middleburg, Va.
Why she'll win: People love an underdog. Wendy's a mom from middle America. Her designs aren't drop-dead but the fact that she got this far is.
Why she won't: She's whiney and always seems flustered. Plus, her designs don't measure up to the other finalists'.

If it weren't for the nostalgia, I would have dismissed Shanghai Bistro as yet another yuppie hub. On the first day of the Chinese New Year, we sat down at the Shanghai Bistro for lunch. Right smack along Makati¡¯s crowded streets with set menus for power lunches, Shanghai Bistro is ideal for that corporate get-together over Hong Kong dimsum and Shanghai cuisine. It could have been the typical business district resto, one that sold more image than cuisine, with prices just expensive enough for that yuppie paycheck. But the image it projected was pleasing.
The backdrop of this rendezvous for professionals is a mock-up of old fifties clubs in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and this is further refined by a lot of modern zen. This lent it an atmosphere straight out of the movie "Joy Luck Club." Red lanterns were strung from the ceiling; a blown-up photograph of a porcelain-faced Chinese lady¡ªwhom I fell in love with¡ªwas in the interior; and the walls were lined with photos of old China, prodding patrons to ponder them with interest and, perhaps, to ask questions. You might say that Time has somehow chased old watering holes into Shanghai Bistro.
Kung Pao Chicken
We first asked for their dimsum menu. For me, it¡¯s generally a good omen when a Chinese restaurant¡¯s dimsum line is good. Specifically, their siomai had good texture; the ground meat with coarsely chopped pork tidbits did marvels for me. However, the Bistro¡¯s Spare Ribs needed more tweaking. They were stuck to each other like family. For me, it¡¯s bad eating when you have to pry portions apart from each other before you can take it to your teeth.
In my company was Taste Associate Editor Jeremy Malcampo; this half-breed always turns entirely Chinese whenever dimsum is on the table. He was pretty excited, and we acted a mite unruly. Our waitress Gracie, despite our rowdy behavior, never so much as showed a few furrows on her brow. She never forgot to smile, just like the other attendants who clustered around our table, each with the will to serve. They were never impatient, despite the fact that we switched orders several times and asked many questions.
Our food arrived fast. As I said, they had very good service¡ªsave for an incident with an ill-mannered waiter who took my plate while I was still taking a bite, and shoved the replacement back with much clattering. The Bistro¡¯s Stir-fried Fish Fillet in Sweet Vinegar Sauce, which is Garoupa fillets with cabbage, carrots, and green peppers soaked in a potage of vinegar, tasted too mild. The sauce seemed muted; I couldn¡¯t taste it on the fish even though it was soaked in the sauce. But the fillets could stand alone without the sauce.
Their Kung Pao Chicken, a platter of chopped chicken breasts mixed with cashew nuts, green papayas, carrots, red peppers, and green bell peppers in a sweet sauce, had relatively good texture. The sauce had a good and distinctly sweet wine taste, but this overpowered all ingredients in the dish (except the bell peppers, whose flavors emerged when bitten).
Their Yang Chow Fried Rice, mixed with eggs, shrimps, and spring onions, needed more flavor. The shrimp mixed with the rice was blown up and over-soaked; that¡¯s probably why it was tasteless.
Shanghai Bistro¡¯s Fried Pork Ribs with Minced Garlic were placed on a bed of fried and salted Pok choy leaves. The leaves were good, but the ribs were erratic and overdone. Most of the ribs were dry, though some were juicy, but they all had toasted surfaces (it must have been an uneven fire). In addition, there wasn¡¯t much flavor.
You could sum up the flavors of Shanghai Bistro in one word: mild. If you¡¯re looking for that strong old-Manila Chinese taste, you¡¯d best look elsewhere. But, wisely, mild is a good thing. It shows that the Shanghai Bistro keeps close tabs on their use of MSG¡ªunlike most Chinese restaurants out there, where customers come out feeling drowsy.

The Gates is a project for Central Park unveiled by great artists Christo and Jean-Claude last February 12, 2005.It will be viewed for 16 days with 7,500 attraction gates from 59th Street to 110th Street. Seven feet Saffron fabric panels were hanged above the ground. All New Yorkers and visitors are invited to enjoy this great exhibit.

Valentine's Day Special
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

On to San Francisco! Super fun happy times!
Seacrest starts off the show by looming large over the Golden Gate, adding to the glorious history of that span. Unfortunately, the mist coming off the bay is leaving Seacrest’s coif a little flat. Seems like he and San Francisco aren’t such a good match after all.
The Transamerica building! Alamo Square! A cable car! Yep, this is indeed San Francisco. So let’s go out to the auditions at the Cow Palace. One of the first people we see in this fine, gray building is David Korbel, who claims he’s auditioning for both Idol and Seacrest’s job. Seacrest says he doesn’t feel threatened by David’s dreams. I guess it takes more than shiny white teeth and sculpted hair to land this gig. You need that certain…zip!
Our guest judge this time around is Moesha. Moesha! You know I want you so bad! And there’s nothing I can do to keep me away from you! Wait. I’m confusing the fictional Moesha with the actual Brandy. Moving on, we’re treated to Albert Minero, who describes himself as basically pretty good. Also, his personality is like a razor blade. So…dull? Ho! Genius at work! These things don’t write themselves! Anyway, Albert doesn’t make it. All those Mineros, all that disappointment.
Matthew Miller, how will you do? I mean, after you fail on Idol, how will your one man stage show do? Let’s hope the San Francisco Weekly gives it a positive review. By the way, I had absolutely no idea that was a Kelly Clarkson song.
Back from a break, before advertising his fresh catch of the day, Seacrest introduces a pair of crooners. Jamie Koehler and Ross Williams. How do you tell them apart? Well, Jamie is the big one with the shiny cheeks. He’s also wearing a shirt based on Eddie Van Halen’s guitar. And Ross is the one wearing a hat that matches his hair, which you don’t see much these days. What a debt these two owe to the heroic John Stevens, who courageously forged a trail for crooners on American Idol and earned his driver’s license all in the same year.
Next up is Elizabeth Pha. It seems like she took a boat to the audition and got caught in a fishing net disembarking. This is maybe the worst thing I’ve ever seen anybody wear in my entire life. Although I guarantee people would pay $9.95 online to look at it. I do enjoy how she took off one of her braces and glued it to her forehead, however. But somehow, despite not being able to sing or dress herself, Elizabeth makes it on to the next round.
Hey, you know something? Idol moms are insane. INSANE, I tells ya! Almost as insane as Lashunda yelling at the holding pen for some reason. So that brings us to Justin Clark and his mother. Justin, who covered his jeans in dirt for good luck, shows his best to the judges. And gosh darn it, they like it! Whooo! Hoooo! Oooooooh! Ooooooooo! Whooo! Ho! Oh! Woooooo! Oooooooooh! Ok! Ok! Oooooooooooo! Help me, Lord!
Michael Garcia is one of the many people returning for another try despite being soundly rejected in the past. Michael describes his new look as fashionista, which is quite embarrassing. After all, everybody knows the male term is fashionisto. Michael’s soul tells him that he’s an Idol. Then again, Michael’s soul also told him to wear satin pants with two studded belts. So, you know, don’t pay too much attention to what his soul has to say. Randy’s soul tells Michael to never sing again. And, unlike most Idol rejects, Michael actually gives up on his dream. Devastating, yet sensible.
Now we have Christopher Noll rapping his little heart out. It’s definitely not a gag for The Chris Wylde Show, since that was cancelled in about four days. Nope, this guy just regular sucks. There’s no angle to it. All of his lines did rhyme, though. That’s a step in the right direction.
Nadia Turner is next, and she proudly admits that she has no positive or negative thoughts about the auditions. How smart is that strategy? Not bad. Nadia, by the way, is hot. In case you hadn’t notice. If you were distracted by the hair perhaps, which I am also finding hot. The whole thing is hot. It’s a terrific change of pace.
No! Don’t jump! Wait, Seacrest is just introducing Victor Mercado. After wasting everybody’s time, Victor argues with the judges about his relative talents. Paula tells him it doesn’t matter what they think, it only matters what he thinks. Well, it matters what they think as far as Victor moving on to Hollywood, which he isn’t doing, but you know, chin up, solider! Simon offers Victor $50,000 if he can get a #1 record in the next six months. I suggest he follow Cartman’s lead and form Faith + 1 as soon as possible. Victor later complains that he can move around, which he repeatedly proves by walking around the building.
Jessica Murphy has eyes like one of the children of the corn. She’ll probably mentally control the judges by staring at them and move herself on to the next round. Mmm, maybe not. It’s a shame that those sweatshirts are absolutely worthless now. Sure, they were only worth $1 before she went in there, but now they’re worth zero. Out in the hallway, Jessica engages in more revisionist history Maybe some people just remember things differently than how they actually happened.
Chris Ciompi, you have got to stop moving your mouth so much when you’re singing. In fact, you need to just stop singing. Now Chris will have to cheer himself up with a heaping bowl of penne ciompi for lunch. On another note, could there possibly be a more ironic song for Ivan Ganchev to sing than “We Are The Champions”? The answer is no, there could not.
Ha ha ha! Alcatraz! Throw William Hung in there! That is an absolutely killer line! Bravo, sir! Hey! There’s a cow! Kudos to the judges for actually giving serious comments to the cowlady. That’s well above and beyond the call of duty. I mean…she’s dressed like a cow!
Once again we have the incredibly rich tale of J.P. Molfetta, a man who never lets the facts overwhelm him. He can’t sing that well, he’s been rejected by Idol already this season and the market for sappy boy pop is practically non-existent at this point. But that doesn’t stop him from auditioning or laying down insipid, grade school-level lyrics over generic, forgettable pop beats in his basement studio. No, friend, J.P. knows how to persevere! But he doesn’t know how to move on to Hollywood. Once again, he is gone. And this is the last city, too. What a tragedy. That we’ll all forget about within an hour of tonight’s show.
So that pretty much sums up the audition portion of American Idol. And we’re all richer for having lived through it together.

EVGENY PLUSHENKO WINS EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005
Evgeny Plushenko admits that for him, winning is not the same as before. But he still wins. He captured the men's title for the fourth time in the past six years at the European Championships with a solid but unspectacular program that was good enough to defeat defending champion Brian Joubert of France.
“This was the fourth time. It is not like the first time,” Plushenko said. “The first time it was something new, something special.”
Plushenko won the event in 2000, 2001 and 2003, but was upset last year by Joubert. He didn't, however, want to make this competition a battle between himself and Joubert.
“I said to myself, I should fight with myself today,” Plushenko said. “I didn't want to compete with Brian Joubert or anyone else. I competed against myself.”
Skating to a variation of “The Godfather” theme, Plushenko executed a quad and six triples, but scaled down three jumps and made four minor errors in all.
He ended with a total of 227.14 points to Joubert's 224.43.
Joubert landed a quad and seven triples, but a final attempt at a triple Lutz proved to be a major mistake.
Joubert, who changed coaches less than two weeks prior to the competition, looked exhausted after the performance and had to compose himself before talking to reporters.
“I don't have anything to regret,” he said. “I fought from beginning to end.”
Stefan Lindemann of Germany earned the bronze, with a little help from Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland. Lambiel was in third after the short program, but dropped to fourth when he bungled three straight jumps late in his free skate.
Andrei Griazev of Russia, last year's World Junior champion, finished fifth. In fact all three Russians in the competition completed quads, though Andrei Lezin's only earned him a 14th-place finish.
Next come the World Championships in Russia in March. And as good as Plushenko has been, he's confident he can do even better.
“I look forward for sure with the World Championships in Moscow,” Plushenko said. “I will try my best.”

Folks at TVB are hosting this year's Miss Chinese International Pageant. Take a look at (their) this year's models and pictures; and compare them with their last year's models and pictures.
The quality of models and pictures are hopeless. Furthermore, even on local television they have hardly promoted this event (Pageant 2005), despite the fact that they are supposed to be one of the top-local-terrestrial television channels in Hong Kong.
So what went wrong? Did their management change or do they face budget constraints? It appears that they uploaded the pictures only last night, even though the contest ends on January 29, 2005! Last year they had uploaded good quality pictures almost one month in advance!
Anyway, the links above will take you to both this year's and last year's models' index page(s). I think you will agree with me that it will be very difficult to judge who will win this year. To me, all of them look like blood-hungry ghosts from a cheap horror movie.
Perhaps, TVB needs to take some lessons from the management of See Lai - which is limited to yours truly until now - as in how to host contests and post/upload pictures.

REST muna tayo, mga sister, sa pageant chikahan. For a change ay feel lang naming i-share sa inyo ang pinaka-latest news sa loob at labas ng television industry -- na nagiging pretty much exciting sa panahong "natalbugan" na ng GMA ang kalabang mortal na ABS-CBN in its being Number 1 Station in the Philippines, as far as ratings are concerned.
Naku, wala po kaming kinikilingan, ha. We're just being factual here. In fairness, ilang taon din namang namayagpag sa numero unong slot ang Kapamilya Network (was it 16 years?) bago nagtagumpay ang Kapuso Network in grabbing that all-important "throne". Ika nga, weather-weather as in, pana-panahon lang 'yan, 'no!
Ewan kung coincidence lang. Pero magmula nang magbago ang presidente ng ABS-CBN ay lumaylay, sumablay, at pumalpak na ang kanilang shows na dati'y umaarangkada nang husto sa ratings game. Hindi puwedeng magkaila ang mga figures. Pagpasok ng new Dos president na si Mr Sito Alejandro eh, tila nawalan ng focus at ganda ang ilang shows. Ang pinanggalingan ni Mr Alejandro? Advertising world ata, o pinaka-head ng isang corporate company ng isang brand of home product ba 'yun? Haaaay.
Anyway, baka kulang sa "touch" ng Pinoy local showbiz kaya nagka-leche-leche ang mga programang VICTIM, PIRATED CD, BIDA SI MISTER BIDA SI MISIS, HOME ALONG DA AIRPORT, SEASONS OF LOVE, TANGING INA, MTB: ANG SAYA-SAYA, MORNING STAR, BORN DIVA, at marami pang ibang nagsipag-babu na sa ere't natsugi nang lahat. Maging ang desisyong palitan ni Karen Davila ang institusyon-nang si Korina Sanchez sa TV PATROL ay big "boo-boo" sa local televiewers, kaya hayun at sumadsad ang nasabing newscast sa numero uno ngayong 24 ORAS ng Siyete. Kung hindi man magrereformat ay matsutsugi na rin ata ang MAGANDANG GABI BAYAN, YES YES SHOW, SCQ RELOAD, NGINIIIIG, at SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT.
Pero, sabi nga, hindi puwedeng IPAGSAWALANG-BAHALA ito ng ABS-CBN Management. Lalaban at lababan ang naturang network to "get back" into what they used to -- ang pagiging Numero Unong network ng Pilipinas -- as if it's the biggest deal of their lives. Ang chika nga ng isang kaibigan, "Ang Channel 2 kasi ay very conscious sa ratings at matalo ang katapat ng shows. Samantalang ang Channel 7 ay talagang pinagaganda lang ang kanilang shows para sa ikakasiya ng audience." We agree.
Anyway, for the sake of "sharing" -- lalo na sa mga hindi palabasa ng newspapers (tabloid man o broadsheets) -- heto na po ang mga pambulabog, pasabog, at mga pamatay na ALL-NEW SHOWS ng Kapamilya Network na magsisimula next week 'yung iba at 'yung iba'y in the coming weeks.
1. HOME BOY -- Hosted by Boy Abunda. Daily morning talk show, 10-1045am, Monday-Friday. Chikahan ng any topic under the sun.
2. MOST REQUESTED SHOW (MRS) -- Hosted by Amy Perez, Roderick Paulate, and Marvin Agustin, daily after HOME BOY, 1045-1145am. Kung ano'ng rerequest ng televiewers na ma-watch ay siyang pauunlakan ng show.
Take note na sakop ng dalawang shows na 'to ang SIS nina Janice at Gelli de Belen sa kabila na siyang nagpataob sa MORNING GIRLS.
3. WOWOWEEE -- Hosted by Willie Revillame, ka-back-to-back ng PILIPINAS, GAME KNB ni Kris Aquino. Both are direktang "sasagupa" sa 25-year-old nang EAT BULAGA. In fairness again, GKNB ni Kris is slowly pulling it up sa ratings, at nahahatian na ng audience ang BULAGA na sinasabing maraming pagbabagong magaganap, dahil ata sa kaba?
4. QUIZON AVENUE -- Parang galing sa "Quezon Avenue" na of course, ang sitcom na ito ay pagbibidahan ni Mang Dolphy with his sons Eric Quizon, Jeffrey Quizon, at Vandolph. Ayaw pa ring pabayaan -- at super-respetado pa rin (na siya namang dapat) ng Dos ang Comedy King kahit mashonda na ang lolo niyo.
5. TILL DEATH DO US PART -- Heto na ang katuparan para sa mga fans nina Diether Ocampo at Kristine Hermosa. Yep, bagong soap opera nina Tin-Diet, na nagte-taping na sa ngayon. True-to-life ata ang isang ito dahil talaga namang kasal na ang dalawa sa huwes, sa pambubuko ng press!
6. PANDAY -- Korek, TV series na ito't pagbibidahan ni Jericho Rosales, ang bagong Panday ng makabagong panahon. Nagpirmahan ng kontrata ang Dos with the "creators" of Panday na sina Carlo Caparas and Donna Villa. After FPJ and Bong Revilla, kay Echo inihabilin ang Pinoy legendary character na ito. Pumayag na maging support dito si Phillip Salvador (bilang Clavio), kontrabida naman si Victor Neri. Effect lang dahil matagal nang "jobless" si Ipe, huh!
7. VIETNAM ROSE -- Bagong soap opera ni Maricel Soriano, pero ang sinasabing mas bida ay si Bea Alonzo dahil siya ang talagang Vietnam Rose sa serye. Pasok uli si John Lloyd Cruz, kasama rin sina Jay Manalo at Albert Martinez. Ito ang seryeng hahawakan ni Joel Lamangan bilang direktor, co-directed by Don Cuaresma. 50% ng taping ay dito at 50% naman sa Vietnam. Magkapatid dito sina Marya at Bea. Quite exciting dahil matagaL na ring di nagda-drama ang Diamond Star sa TV. May chikang kinukuhang maging kontrabida dito si Rossana Roces pero tila may umaayaw sa loob!
8. SEARCH FOR A STAR IN A MILLION -- Obviously, pantatapat sa Pinoy Pop Superstar ni Regine Velasquez tuwing Sabado. Hosted by Mark Bautista, Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, and Christian Bautista.
9. STAR DANCE -- Hosted by Marvin Agustin (and Toni Gonzaga nga ba?), pang-dancers naman ito, as in dance competition (individual man o group) na wala ang Siyete. Sort of Dance Fever siguro ang drama. Tuwing Sabado rin.
10. KAMAO -- reality-action drama teleserye nina Robin Padilla, Vina Morales, at Manny Paquiao na sa Subic pa nagte-taping.
11. MY FIRST -- Daily all-around show na intended for the super-many young stars ng ABS-CBN Star Magic (formerly Talent Center) every 5pm, Monday-Friday. Buti naman at may exposure na ang sanrekwang bagets ng Dos!
12. BORA -- Newest sitcom na pagsasamahan ng The Hunks na sina Echo, Piolo, Diet, Bernard at Carlos. Wala na kaming masabi pa. Sana lang ay maging magaling ang scriptwriter, balita pa namang ito ang papalit sa BIDA SI MISTER na siya namang makakatapat ng BAHAY MO BA 'TO every Tuesday.
13. KAYA MO BA 'TO? -- Ala-Extra Challenge, ano pa nga ba? Hosted by Carlos Agassi (na naman?), Chokoleit, at Kitkat na sumikat from being kikay na stand up comedianne. Wish ko lang ay paghusayan ng staff, tulad ng dugo't pawis na ibinubuhos ng Extra Challenge staff kaya namamayagpag ang popularidad nito.
14. GOIN' BULILIT -- talent search for kids (dancing, acting, singing) na di pa namin alam ang hosts
15. Di mabilang na new Cartoons at Korean telenovelas!
16. May niluluto pa ring new Ai-Ai delas Alas and Arnell Ignacio show, pero wala pang detalye dito. Malamang once a week na lang muna ang mga beauty nila.
17. WISH UPON A MEGA -- Sharon Cuneta's new show na nauna nang nai-launch, pero sadly, hindi pa rin nito kinabog ang WISH KO LANG.
18. New VILMA SANTOS show -- Ayon sa press release eh magiging ala-Oprah ang show ni Ate Vi... Ayaw ni Kris, huh!
19. EDU MANZANO - LUCKY MANZANO show -- sitcom na under planning and conceptualization stage pa lang.
ON the other hand, siyempre'y naghahanda rin sa nakatakdang "giyera" sa TV ang Kapuso Network with these new shows:
1. DARNA -- Yes, it's ANGEL LOCSIN na nga po at wala nang iba pa. By April ay tatapusin na ang No.1 seryeng MULAWIN at uumpisahan na ni Angel ang paglipad bilang DARNA. Balitang gaganap bilang Valentina si Alessandra de Rossi, pero tila nag-iinarte ito't bakit daw siya susuporta kay Angel?! Si Direk Dominic Zapanta ang pumalit sa iniwang directorial job ni Joel Lamangan dito (sa sobrang tagal magsimula, no!)
2. ENGKANTADA -- Not sure either 'yun ang title o ENKANTASYA, to be starred by so many GMA stars headed by Sunshine Dizon, etc.
3. BARE -- new talk show with Ricky Lo (for the serious part) and Melanie Marquez (for the light, funny side)
WELL, there you have it, guys... Ang mga bagong ABS-CBN shows na bubulaga in your TV screens in the next days to come, kaya worth the wait sana ang pagdating ng mga ito't magkakaalaman na kung may mga bago silang "pambala" sa shows ng GMA. Tayong mga viewers ang siyang makikinabang sa pangyayaring ito, sa true lang.
And yes, ayaw na ring paawat ng Kapuso dahil this year rin ilulunsad ang GMA International kunsaan mapapanood na rin ang kanilang shows sa ibang bansa't hindi na masosolo ng Kapamilya ang nagagawa ng TFC. Unang target ng Siyete ay ang USA.

BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--Thai advertising agency Matching Studio PCL (MATCH.TH) has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S.-based Miss Universe Organization for the rights to organize the Miss Universe beauty contest in Thailand around May, Thai-language daily Matichon reports, citing a source at Tourism Authority of Thailand. Other than the global event, Matching Studio also got the rights to arrange Miss Thailand Universe 2005, which is scheduled for April.

In 1979, Melanie Marquez was crowned Miss International. After a couple of years, she joined Supermodel of the World 1996 and finished a deserving 1st place to Australia's Big Boned Model Monica Scnarre. This year 2005, she was rumored to joined Mrs. World in February. Many pageant experts said that, Melanie is not prepared to compete in any international pageant because her body is no longer a semi-finalist material.

Binibining Pilipinas keeps
hands off pageant judging
I write concerning an article you published last April 25 in connection with the Binibining Pilipinas 2003 Beauty Pageant held on March 15, 2003. The article said that "hours before (or a day before) the contestants were fed the questions that were likely to be asked."
Please be informed that there is absolutely no truth to your story. Our policy, first and foremost, is never to interfere with the judging, a policy we have maintained over the years. It is inconceivable that the BPCI management would seek access to questions that the judges may (or are likely to) to ask and even more so, pass them around "hours before" the contest.
Second, the pageant was closely monitored by representatives of the Department of Trade and Industry which by law is tasked to see to it that the contest is precisely free from "leaks" and all forms of cheating. In addition, an independent accounting firm-Sycip, Gorres and Velayo-assisted us.
The Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. has for 45 years worked hard to preserve its integrity in the industry and not any less, as a non-stock, non-profit charity organization. We are assuring the Inquirer that we would be the last to "rig" our own contests as

Liam Neeson won best actor honors for his work in Kinsey, the biopic of the famed sex researcher, and Imelda Staunton won the best actress award for her portrayal of a cheerful British cleaning lady who secretly performs abortions in Vera Drake, reported the Los Angeles Daily News.
Pixar Animation's won best animated feature for The Incredibles and its composer, Michael Giacchino, won in the music/score category. The kung-fu epic, House of Flying Daggers, won best foreign film, while Born Into Brothels, about children born to prostitutes in Calcutta's red-light district, won best documentary.

Miss India, Lara Dutta, ran away with the
Miss Universe title in Cyprus. She grabbed
it as easily as she snatched the microphone

Schwarzenegger versus Danny Devito,
Janet Reno versus the United Nations army.
Of course, I¡¯m biased. As an Indian, I was
rooting for Lara, a 21-year-old from
Bangalore. The 5-foot-8 model seemed to
have it all: looks, brains and stunning poise.
The only thing she didn¡¯t have was a
relationship with the judges.
But she obviously didn¡¯t need that. Not with
her beauty, not with her charm, not with her
ability to keep me enthralled. Yes, thanks to
her, I set a world record for the longest time
a man has watched television without
touching the remote control.
When Lara glided around in her bikini, I set
another world record -- for the longest time
without a heart beat. If Sports Illustrated
doesn¡¯t offer her a contract for its annual
swimsuit issue, I¡¯ll be very upset. I may even
sue. After all, I¡¯ve scanned the issue every
year and don¡¯t recall ever seeing an Indian
in a swimsuit. Not even Vijay Singh. Maybe
I need to buy Sports Illustrated¡¯s annual sari
issue.
Lara¡¯s victory cemented India¡¯s new
reputation as a virtual factory for beautiful
women. The nation has produced Sushmita
Sen (Miss. Universe 1994), Aishwarya Rai
(Miss. World 1994), Diana Hayden (Miss.
World 1997) and Yukta Mookhey (Miss.
World 1999). And, I am very proud to say, it
also produced my beautiful cousin Rani
Jeyaraj, a Miss. World finalist in 1996.

GlobalBeauties.com has been down for the last 24 hours or so due to Filipino hackers' dirty action, something people from Filipino sites and boards had threatened us with (no surprise, they cannot take any criticism).
It will be back on air soon, and we will keep up our work, alway informing the world the latest about international pageantry and reporting the TRUTH, even when some caanot take it.
After our Miss World comments, we received over 600 emails of support, including great Filipino fans, who agreed with what we wrote. However, some 30 lunatics, people blinded by nationalism and hate, also wrote horrible things. There was one person who offered money for us to "back up and tell the world Miss Philippines actually deserved to win the Miss World title". Is it a joke?
But there's nothing to worry, GB will be back soon.

It's a few days left before we finally say goodbye to the Year 2004, and for those fans and supporters who simply enjoy, adore, and just wanna have fun in watching male beauty pageants and modeling competitions, this one you shouldn't miss -- on December 28, Tuesday, 8pm.
The newest all-male model search in town is called "KOUROS 2004" -- which, according to one of the organizers and producers of the contest, Mr. Rhoel Raymundo Mendoza, has the concept of "celebrating beauty and allure of the male physique". It is produced by RRMDPTS Events and Fashion Artists Foundation or FAF (a group of fashion designers).
KOROUS 2004 male model search is happening on Tuesday, December 28, 8pm at BOYSIE'S BAR and Entertainment Venue, located at #2113 M.H. del Pilar St., Malate, Manila (near Malate Church) with 22 gorgeous young men vying for the unique title.
According to Mr. Mendoza, "kouros" is the ancient Greek word for "male youth," the term being widely used by modern art historians to describe a certain type of male sculpture. Through the years, however, the word came to mean "the ideal male physical perfection." Kouros 2004, therefore, is basically a search for that one man who possesses a comely face combined with a well-proportioned body -- the absolute personification of "kouros."
The press release, which was handed to yours truly by the organizers, says: This is why unlike other competitions of this sort, KOUROS 2004 will not have a native costume or ausal wear portion nor a Barong Tagalog or formal wear segment. Instead, the candidates will strut only in trunks and other seductive wear created by members of the FAF. This is to emphasize the candidates' physique which is the main focus of the pageant.
The show, which is touted to be the ultimate celebration of male pulchritude, promises to be fast-paced, enjoyable, worthwhile, and a visual delight -- sexy but not vulgar, seductive yet proper, tempting and provocative but not indecent. The swimwear and seductive wear will br provided by Ramon Favila, Eddie Castro, Simon Ariel Vasquez, Jay Sustiguer, Ryan Pacioles, and Tiny Cuachon. Make up by Donna Esmillo. The show is directed by fashion director and talent manager Tom Molina.
